Guitar Guide

Although many people would like to have the knowledge of creating beautiful, melodic songs on the guitar, few are willing to put in the endless hours of practice. To get started one must purchase a guitar and a guitar guide, and set aside just a little bit of time to practice. For Basic guitar playing and songwriting you will need to learn a few things such as; basic chords, basic scales and combining those in your own creative way to form songs.
First, learning to play chords is essential in guitar playing and is a must for a guitar guide. Almost all songs consist of different chords. A chord consists of several single notes grouped together, by pressing the strings down on the neck (also known as the fret-board). The first set of chords usually learned are called 'open chords', these are the main group of chords that thousands of songs are made up of. How you position your fingers on the fret-board determines the name of the chord and its corresponding sound. When songwriting you will play a series of different chords together, this is called chord progression.
The second essential thing to learn, are scales. One can find a list of every scale in the back of any guitar guide. Scales consist of single notes played consecutively in a specific order. There are only twelve notes that can be played, but you can play those twelve notes in different ways and different octaves, this would make them sound higher or lower. The order determines the type of scale and the key it is in. The two basic scales to learn first are the Major and Minor scales. Different scales produce different sounds, or a different feel. For example the Major scale has a happy sound, and the Minor scale creates more of an eerie sound. The scales or parts of scales you will play in a song are determined by the chord progression you choose when writing your song. There are some rules to follow when song writing so you don't hit a sour note, but for the the most part you just play and let your creative juices flow.
The last step for basic guitar playing and songwriting is to combine the chords and scales to create a song. These same chords and scales have been played over and over again by many artists. Remember there are only twelve notes. Things such as timing; how fast or slow you play, where you start or stop a song, placing a pause in the song. Also, when you change to a different part of your song, you can't play the same thing over and over again, it would sound monotonous. Placing changes in your song is essential to keep the listener entertained. What makes a song different or unique? This is something that cannot be learned in a guitar guide and will solely depend on your creativeness, and also is what makes it FUN.
In conclusion, you only need to learn a few things for basic guitar playing and song writing, a handful of open chords, the Major and Minor scales and a touch of creativity. If you are willing to buy a guitar, a learner's guide and put in a few hours a week of practice, you will soon have the knowledge to write a basic song of your own. Then, if you enjoy the basics, you can continue to learn advanced techniques and who knows; maybe one day you could become the next Eddie Van Halen.
